What is mental skills training

Mental skills training is the practice of acquiring and implementing mental skills for the purpose of increasing performance.  Performance increases can be seen in a variety of domains including sport, in a corporate setting and within individuals’ personal lives.  The origins of mental skills range from a variety of sources including: psychology, behavior modification, goal setting, and attentional control.

Who can benefit from Mental Skills Training?

Mental skills training can be beneficial to any individual, team, or organization that is looking to improve their performance. Strong mental skills can help an athlete, for example, to have more consistent performances and not crumble under the stress, increase their confidence, and feel more in control, to name a few of the many benefits.

Building Blocks of Peak Performance

Mindset & Motivation An athlete’s mindset will largely determine if their motivation is intrinsic (internally motivated) or extrinsic (externally motivated).
Mindfulness Mindfulness is an acute awareness of oneself at the present moment and is a foundation for many other mental skills
Self- Awareness Self-awareness allows an individual to thoughtfully reflect on their emotions and performances.
Productive Thinking Productive thinking is the ability of an individual to attribute events in a way that is productive and promotes a positive experience.
Self- Confidence An increase in self-confidence, or the belief in one’s ability to achieve is a critical skill.
Concentration The ability to concentrate and focus on the task at hand while eliminating outside distractions is a key skill in peak performance.
Energy & Stress Management This skill helps an athlete cope with negative stress such as anxiety in high-stress situations as well as increasing energy in situations that require it.
Imagery / Visualization Imagery allows an athlete to practice and visualize performance situations prior to experiencing them live which helps them to be better prepared.  It can also be used for a variety of other circumstances such as energization and relaxation.
Goal Setting One of the most widely used, if not the most widely used technique to increase the performance of both athletes and organizations.
Communication Effective communication is critical in both sport and within the corporate world.

Other points of consideration

  • Mental skills training is like any other new skill. It takes practice and commitment to implement effectively.  Using imagery once or twice before you tee-off is not going to help you hit more fairways.
  • There is not a one-size fits all approach to mental skills training.
